Monterey County was formed in the year 1850 but in 1874 some parts were given to County San Benito. It was Monterey bay from where the County derived its recognition or name. In 1602, Sebastian Vizcaino named the bay in the honor of the Count of Monterrey and New Spain’s viceroy. According to census, 3,771 square miles is the total area of Monterey County of which 449 Square miles is under water and rest is land. It is estimated that the County is 1.5 times larger than Delaware State.
